Marco Verde, educated as an Engineer at Università degli Studi di Cagliari (Italy), earned his post-professional Master’s degree (2005) and DEA’s degree (2008) in Genetic Architectures (a.k.a. Bio Digital Design) at EsArq-UiC, Barcelona (Spain). Marco is an interdisciplinary practitioner and educator focused on integral design strategies and processes for Non-Standard Architecture. Marco is specialized in emergent technologies and advanced design and he is an expert in the design of material systems, interactive composite structures of variable geometry, interactive systems and parametric-associative systems. <a name='more'></a><span class="fullpost">In early 2005, Marco moved to Spain and joined HYBRIDa (Sylvia Felipe + Jordi Truco Architects) working as project manager, designer, and researcher. During three years, he has been deeply involved in the HybGrid® research project: a patented, real-time responsive and adaptive structural system. The HybGrid, currently renamed as Hypermembrane, has been awarded twice within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) in 2011 and 2012. Since 2006, Marco taught design studios and workshops within undergraduate and postgraduate programs across several schools among which EsArq-UiC (Spain), Pratt Institute (USA), Elisava (Spain), University of Nicosia (Cyprus), University of Cyprus (Cyprus), and AA Visiting School in Paris. Since 2006, Marco is also member of the teaching staff at the Bio Design Research Group, an initiative directed by Jordi Truco and currently developed within the ADDA (Advanced Design and Digital Architecture) postgraduate Masters’ Degree Program at Elisava, Escuela Superior de Disseny i Enginyeria de Barcelona. In fall 2008, Marco has moved to The Netherlands to join Hyperbody. (HRG). Hyperbody is the research group at the Faculty of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology directed by Prof. ir. Kas Oosterhuis (ONL) focusing on Non-Standard and Interactive Architecture. Here, Marco had held a position as Assistant Professor within the Masters’ degree program in Non-Standard and Interactive Architecture. During 2012 Marco thought as Adjunct Assistant Professor at La Sapienza (Rome), and has been invited as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo to direct a Fall-Term Design Studio at the School of Architecture in Cambridge (CND).<br />

Marco is the founder of [P]a, Performative Design Processes for Architecture, a research and education initiative launched in 2007 and operating within academia to develop interdisciplinary research in computational design strategies, material systems, interactive structures of variable geometry, composites structures and industrialized customization in Architecture. In 2011, Marco inaugurated ALO. ALO is an architectural office where practice, research, and education combine in collaboration with an international network of research partners. ALO develops ALO Co.Re.Division, a resident laboratory focusing on computational research and data-driven fabrication in architecture that serves as an interdisciplinary platform for all activities developed at ALO.<br />

[P]a agenda agenda is developed through Studios and Workshops held within undergraduate and post-professional programmes. Since 2006, a broad spectrum of investigations have been developed within a number of schools across Europe and North-America especially focusing on topics such as Computational Design, Material Systems, Interactive Structures of Variable Geometry, Composites Materials In Architecture and Computer-Aided Manufacturing Processes and Protocols for industrialized customization in Architecture. Computation in Design and Fabrication, Design of Material Systems, and Deep Formations are the three strands through which Marco's teaching practice unfolds contributing to the investigations and development of the intellectual background and practical know-how that support a contemporary discourse within the architectural domain. The agenda in “Computation in Design and Fabrication“ is to investigate the field of evolutionary strategies for design to explore novel organizational logics and languages in architecture. Design strategies dealing with the concepts of topology, time, and parameters are researched while experiencing the shift from the design of final objects to the design of systems and processes that from simple rules can produce higher levels of complexity and emerging behaviours. Designing by code, the study of formal systems, the study of algorithmic processes or computational simulation techniques are among the topics investigated. Digital core studies in parametric-associative design and computer-aided manufacturing are deeply integrated into the agenda. Of course, CNC fabrication of refined corroborative prototypes is a key aspect of this strand. Design and fabrication are regarded as inextricably entwined aspects of an integral, non-linear design processes. Computation in Design and Fabrication aims at experiencing contemporary digital technologies from a humanistic point of view gearing with the thinking and practical skills that lead to the redefinition of our role as practitioners along the process of design.<br />

<b>ACA2.0 | DESIGN OF MATERIAL SYSTEMS</b><br />

The design-research in Material Systems focuses on the investigation of spontaneous physical processes of form adaptation and self-organization that occur in space and time whenever matter is subjected to a field of extrinsic forces.
The agenda of this strand is to study form as actual, spatial expression of dynamic processes. Through physical form-finding experiments, self-forming morphologies are researched to understand the relationships among their spatial organization, the intrinsic qualities of the material they are made of, and the extrinsic forces to which matter is subjected. Endogenous organizational criteria and strategies for spatial growth are then abstracted through a systematic analysis. The information collected become then instrumental to the design of spatially ariculated, multiperformative, light material systems for architectural application. For this propose, morphogenetic processes are unfolded. Systematic hands-on investigations into fibrous, composite, aggregates, and elastic materials combine with digital studies in advanced parametric-associative design and research in computer aided manufacturing processes. Research implemented through physical prototyping and supported by digital means is the main design instrument that leads the entire design process.<br />

Deep Formations agenda focuses on the design of architectural formations which inner and outer spatial organization are expression of continuous material transition of deep volumetric patterns. Starting from the study of the organizational capabilities of dynamic systems in space and time, the design of non cave-like morphologies is researched. Special emphasis is placed on the understanding of performative and spatial qualities, structural integrity, and programmatic organizational abilities as architectural features inextricably related to shape. Hereby, spatial articulation becomes a necessity to perform multiple functionalities at the same time. Such a capability is studied as emerging quality proceeding from the local interaction among small-scale, volumetric building elements that develop into structurally sound well-organized patterns. Accordingly, the investigation of hybrid spatial construction systems that strategically combine multiple materials and fabrication techniques takes a special role. Researching (almost) completely automated CNC fabrication processes and fast and clean assembly procedures is also especially important. The development of advanced design intelligences for a smart and conscious usage of composite materials is among the key subjects of this series.<br />
<br />
<b>THE ROOTS.</b> In the field of industrial production, the adjective “deep” describes certain physical features of a given object or production process. In metal forming, for example, “Deep Drawing” is a stamping production technique whereby a metal blank is drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. A part is said to be deep-drawn if its depth is at least half of its diameter. While the deep drawn stamping process is occurring, matter is driven into the die through a controlled flow. The three-dimensional complex articulation of the continuous shape produced is a distinctive feature of deep drawn object. Automotive body and structural parts are examples of deep drawn components. What becomes crucial is that, in deep drawn parts, the geometric complexity of the shapes collaborates to the structural stability of the part. Thus, in such a context, the adjective “deep” holds multiple meanings being catalyst of materials properties, geometric and structural features, manufacturing process, and global performative features of the product.<br />
<br />
The definition of deepFORMATIONS borrows the connotation of the term above described and couples it with the concept of "formation". Defined as “the process by which something develops into a particular thing or shape” (Longman), this term put special emphasis on the internal nature of the process of development of a certain entity. In developmental biology, this process of formation is known as Morphogenesis: the process of growth whereby the Phenotype develops in time under the direction of the Genotype. The Phenotype is the actual state of an organism that manifests the physical properties, physiology, morphology, and behaviour of the organism while the genotype is the set of internal inherited instructions that govern the growth. At the same time, as widely described by D’Arcy Thompson, phenotypes growth is influenced by the interactions with environmental forces and mechanical processes acting on it. Such interaction results ─by a process of self-organization─ in the emergence of organized configuration of matter in space and over time and contributes to the differentiation of phenotypes of same genotype. During the formations of patterns and the process of differentiation, heterogeneity (regarded as the quality of a system that results by the adaptation of its constituent parts) becomes a crucial quality of complex systems. Under a broader viewpoint, adaptation itself, as pointed by Kevin Kelly (1998), is one of the true organizing principles intrinsic to the development of systems:<br />

<i>In heterogeneity is creation of the world. A uniform entity must adapt to the world by occasional earth-shattering revolutions, one of which is sure to kill it. A diverse heterogeneous entity, on the other hand, can adapt to the world in a thousand daily minirevolutions, staying in a state of permanent, but never fatal, churning.</i><br />
<br />
<b>THE AGENDA.</b> Rising from the concept introduced, deepFORMATIONS series aims a design approach rooted in Systems Thinking. Through a holistic understanding of design and making it challenges the exploration of alternative spatial repertories and actual architectural futures. The agenda, implemented through a research-based design approach, is focused on the investigation of advanced computational simulation techniques for the development of novel generative strategies in architecture. deepFORMATIONS series fosters the departure from conventional fragmented design approaches rooted in criteria of mono-functional optimization. Accordingly, architectural formations are regarded as systems whose phenotype manifests as deep, three-dimensional, multiperformative patterns. Key emphasis is especially on the exploration of not cave-like morphologies. These, by means of physical modulation, differentiation, and structural redundancy of their patterns, can be integral catalysts of architectural, structural, environmental and production/assembly features. Hence, such formations would show neither mono-functional specialization of parts nor explicit physical distinction among structural frame, environmental threshold or habitable space. Indeed, the understanding of the emerging spatial and programmatic opportunities of such material organizations becomes crucial to the success of the studies taken.<br />

Finally deepFORMATIONS series pursues a fully volumetric development of the architectural object that is regarded as an integral body which constituents are strictly entwined and locally specialized but never segregated to perform single functions. <b>K1.0_ COMPOSITE MATERIALS</b><br />
<br />
Architectural development and realistic form experimentation is hampered by a gap between design methods, which may be strongly influenced by algorithms and computation, and traditional artisan building technology, characterized by producing smaller and larger parts and assembling them rather crudely on the building site.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless there is an evolution going on. Buildings can become much lighter and lot more efficient in the building process and consequent use through integration of physical functions in composite structures. Composites consist of two or more materials that complement each other’s properties. Reinforced concrete is a relatively crude composite. Band-aid and tapes are the most common ones. A very successful technology in yacht building is vacuum injection: laying woven fibres in a mould, covering it with foil and then suck out the air from underneath to be replaced by polymer resin. Structures can be manufactured in relatively simple ways by weaving and impregnating.<br />
<br />
The most commonly applied composites consist of high-grade fibres (aramid, carbon, glass) and polyester or epoxy resin. They are supposed to compete against steel and aluminium. This struggle has distracted us from the fact that metal can very well be a composite ingredient with several advantages. Metals guide electricity and heat, they can be welded, and they can be plastically bent: they keep their shape after deformation. Woven metals are much easier to deform than plate, also in doubly curved shapes. Freezing an acquired shape with a resin, or perhaps plaster or some other dough is still possible. The architectural domain seems increasingly interested in investigating novel strategies and processes from design to final materialization. Especially the advent of an empirical aptitude is setting the basis for the replacement of exhausted rationalistic design approaches and already acquainted processes of metaphorization.<br />
The research in Performative Design Processes for Architecture targets a non-linear and holistic approach to architectural design while stressing the necessity for an interdisciplinary aptitude. In this framework, the process of design becomes a performative process that generates knowledge at every stage, from design to final materialization, while it aims to blur the boundaries of disciplines. <br />

Performative Design Processes for Architecture develops in-depth investigations in Material Systems and physical Form-Finding strategies. Currently, the design-research territory is investigated consistently within a limited number of well established education-research programs and academic institution such as the <a href="http://emtech.aaschool.ac.uk/">Emergent Technologies and Design programme–EmTech</a>, directed by Michael Weinstock at the AA Architectural Association (London), the <a href="http://icd.uni-stuttgart.de/?p=3343">Institute for Computational Design</a>, directed by Achim Menges(Stuttgart), and the <a href="http://www.ma-s-lab.blogspot.com/">Bio Design Research Group-BioDLab</a>, directed by Jordi Truco at ELISAVA-Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona).<br />
Performative Design Processes for Architecture aims at contributing to the further development of such ongoing research. Under the guidance of Marco Verde, researchers and designers investigate the dynamics and processes responsible of the emergence of articulated organizations of matter in space and time. Through structural form-finding based design techniques, form is investigated as actual expression of synergic processes of material auto-organization and adaptation. Hereby, physical investigations, material science, and advanced computational processes for design and manufacturing combine to shape an integral approach to architectural design.<br />

In a data-driven architectural practice, an aptitude for exploration and advanced experimentation in generative techniques is needed for the entire design process, from the earliest experiments to the final production phase. Therefore, bringing new digital productions to the scale of a real building implies the need for radical innovation in non-standardized building solutions. This paradigm shift implies rethinking buildings as systems rather than the juxtaposition of optimized and monofunctional layers.<br />
One of the main challenges of data-driven architectural practice is maintaining consistency from design to materialization. Thus, by pursuing a holistic, nonlinear approach and an interdisciplinary practice, designers can move away from a traditional linear production workflow based on a succession of fragmented processes. Through the pursuit of data-driven architectural practice, the boundaries between the specializations of architect, engineer, and manufacturer become blurred.<br />

Due to the integral design method, the system can be real-time manufactured (employing a 3 axis CNC milling machine) in each one of the possible morphological configurations. Once being CNC produced, all system's components are ready to be assembled. Production is not addressed to a phase of post design optimization, but is integrated in the design process.<br />

A key physical subject of protoSPACE 3.0 project, protoDECK is a catalyst as much as it is an expression of architectural and interaction design. Designed as an open system, protoDECK is both physically and behaviourally a modular system developed to embody multi-modal interaction, and to be adaptable to the research and education needs of protoSPACE 3.0. <br />
The protoDECK is a modular system of interlocking, fully customizable wooden tiles. The design of protoDECK rises from integral application of computationally advanced design techniques and digital fabrication methods. <br />

The systems also integrates the capabilities of a conventional technical floor, providing a fast solution for the installation of the infrastructure needed to support various current and unanticipated future technical installations and upgrades to the Interactive Experimentation Lab through a modular system of interlocking, fully customizable wooden tiles. The pattern of protoDECK is composed of 361 one-off tiles. The physical features of each tile and its local behaviour are programmed by a parametric-associative rule set: a combination of geometric interrelationships and algorithmic processes regulates both the topological variation and morphological modulation. The modulation of the pattern, which is restricted to specific physical limits of adaptation, also negotiates with manufacturing, assembly, and cost effectiveness criteria. Moreover, being developed according to a file to factory logic, protoDECK can be parametrically upgraded while being always ready for immediate CNC production. <br />

The qualities of modularity and customization have giving rise to the behavioral system of the protoDECK. Out of a total of 361 tiles, a group of the 189 tiles in the centre of the floor have been organized into a behavioral group of interactive tiles. Within each of these tiles is a small, embedded microprocessor, called protoNODE. Each protoNODE is networked with its neighbours and is designed to give a tile a local intelligence whereby it parses and interprets force sensor data from footsteps and controls the output of a fullcolor led lighting system. Each tile is therefore a member of a larger interactive system, which can be programmed with various behaviours to support numerous interaction scenarios. In addition to being fully programmable, the protoNODE is a physically modular system as well. Sensors and output devices can be added or removed which allow the protoNODEs to vary independently and support future, unanticipated uses of the device. <br />

In Nature, form is an expression of temporal processes of adaptation and occupation of space. In time, matter interacts with the surrounding forces and energy flows while it self-organizes in differentials structures and patterns. Time is therefore the instrument to understand form and space rather than a fourth dimension.
Participants will delve into these issues while approaching a procedural and integral understanding of form: procedural as form will be investigated as derived from processes of self-organization that take place through space and over time; integral because form will be regarded as expression of the equilibrium among structural, performative and organizational features.<br />
Going beyond the mere visual appeal of the formal exuberance of natural systems, participants will be challenged in the execution of systematic and controlled physical experiments of Form-Finding that, through the adoption of various photographic and analysis techniques, will allow the study of the temporal organization of matter. The workshop will especially focus on dynamical systems, aggregates and tensile structures; the results of the experiments will be catalogued and analysed as pre-materials of possible architectures exploring a holistic understanding of form, structure and performance.<br />
The final goal of the course is to develop a rich and evocative collection of prototypes, photographic images and digital representations to evaluate, at different scales, possible architectural applications for the studies carried out. These will be instrumental to open a discussion on the implications of an empirical design approach that exploits the inherent intelligence of matter to create form and space.
A comprehensive and systematic documentation of all stages of the process will serve as an operational and critical instrument.<br />

Each student will need a digital camera capable of recording HD movies and a medium sized tripod.
Each student will need a laptop computer preloaded with the following software: Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhinoceros, Autocad and QuickTime Pro.

<b style="font-weight: bold;">FORM-FINDING. </b><b>SPATIAL FORMATIONS THROUGH MATERIAL INTELLIGENCE</b><br />
In Nature, “Morphogenesis” is the process that causes an organism to develop its shape. During morphogenesis, nutrients are metabolized into the building materials that are well organized in space and over time. To save energy, only the minimum necessary amount of material is produced; its strategic arrangement provides strength and multiperformative capabilities. Hence, formal articulation emerges as a necessity.<br />
<br />
As the preservation of resources increasingly demands our attention, many industries already aim to rethink their approaches, processes, and products. In aerospace engineering, for example, the mechanistic segregation of functionalities in simple parts (e.g. fuselage, engines, and wings) is being replaced by a holistic understanding: the aircraft becomes a multifunctional body without dichotomy among the parts (Blended Wings). This shift will radically change the way aircrafts will be designed, built, and their conformation.<br />
<br />
Within the architectural domain, the customary processes of production and operation of the built environment imply high material and energy consumption. Waste is often further increased by a linear and fragmented approach with a gap between design and construction. The development of new integral strategies becomes therefore crucial to innovate the way of thinking and building spaces. Ultimately, as in aerospace engineering, also architecture and its processes may undergo a radical change.<br />
<br />
The 5-day research-based program will approach this problematic while investigating form as expression of an efficient process of adaptation and self-organization that occurs in space and time. Students will be challenged to study how minimum amounts of materials can produce stable articulated organizations when stressed by extrinsic forces. For this purpose, a number of Form-Finding techniques will be investigated (Minimal Surfaces, Catenaries, Grid Shells, Minimal nets).<br />
<br />
At first, students will develop controlled physical experiments to learn and abstract the principles of materials’ behaviour. Later, this knowledge will become instrumental to the design of systems and processes responsible of articulated integral morphologies. These bodies can behave at the same time as structures, envelopes, and filters of environmental conditions as well as they define heterogeneous spaces for inhabitation.<br />
<br />
Final aim of the course is to develop articulated prototypes that are expression of the qualities of the materials employed, the forces involved, and the construction strategy implemented. The final discussions will be focused on whether or not the students’ proposals pave the way for a more efficient production and a holistic understanding of the processes of design and construction as well as of space and its qualities. Comprehensive and systematic documentation of all stages of the process will serve as critical operative instrument.<br />

<b style="font-weight: bold;">FORM-FINDING. </b><b>FORMAZIONI SPAZIALI ATTRAVERSO L’INTELLIGENZA MATERIALE.</b><br />
In Natura, la "Morfogenesi" è il processo di sviluppo della forma di un organismo. Durante la morfogenesi, i nutrienti sono metabolizzati nei materiali da costruzione che sono ben organizzati nello spazio e nel tempo. Per risparmiare energia, solo il minimo quantitativo di materiale necessario è prodotto. La sua disposizione strategica fornisce massima resistenza meccanica e capacità multiperformative. Pertanto, l’articolazione formale emerge come una necessità.<br />
<br />
Poiché la tutela delle risorse richiede sempre di più la nostra attenzione, molte industrie ripensano già i loro approcci, processi e prodotti. In ingegneria aerospaziale, ad esempio, la segregazione meccanicistica delle funzionalità in parti semplici (fusoliera, motori e ali) è in fase di sostituzione alla volta di una comprensione olistica: l'aereo diventa un corpo multifunzionale senza dicotomia tra le parti (Blended Wings). Il cambio altererà radicalmente il modo in cui l’aereo sarà progettato, costruito, e la sua conformazione.<br />
<br />
In architettura, i processi abituali per la produzione e il funzionamento dell’ambiente costruito implicano un elevato consumo di materiale ed energia. Gli sprechi sono spesso ulteriormente amplificati da un approccio lineare e frammentato con una grave disconnessione tra disegno e costruzione. Lo sviluppo di nuove strategie integrali diventa dunque fondamentale per innovare il modo di pensare e produrre spazi. In definitiva, come in ingegneria aerospaziale, anche l'architettura e i suoi processi potranno subire un cambiamento radicale.<br />
<br />
Il programma di design-research di cinque giorni affronterà questa problematica mentre indagherà la forma come espressione di un processo efficiente di adattamento e auto-organizzazione che accade nello spazio e nel tempo. Gli studenti saranno chiamati a indagare come quantità minime di materiale siano in grado di produrre organizzazioni articolate stabili quando soggette all’azione di forze estrinseche. A tal fine, saranno investigate diverse tecniche di Form-Finding (Minimal Surfaces, Catenaries, Grid Shells, Minimal nets).<br />

Inizialmente gli studenti investigheranno attraverso esperimenti fisici il comportamento di sistemi materiali per comprenderne e astrarne i principi regolatori. Questa conoscenza diventerà poi lo strumento fondamentale per la progettazione di sistemi e processi generatori di morfologie integrali spazialmente articolate. Questi corpi possono integrare simultaneamente le capacità perfomative di struttura, involucro e filtro di condizioni ambientali così come definire spazi abitabili eterogenei.<br />

Scopo finale del corso è di produrre prototipi spazialmente articolati che siano espressione delle qualità dei materiali impiegati, delle forze coinvolte, e della strategia di costruzione sviluppata. La discussione finale approfondirà se le proposte degli studenti aprano o no la strada ad una produzione più efficiente e ad una comprensione olistica del processo di progettazione e costruzione cosi come dello spazio e delle sue qualità. Un’ampia e sistematica documentazione di tutte le fasi del processo servirà come strumento operativo fondamentale.<br />

Our objective is the exploration of novel productions in fashion and architecture. Fashion scene today has become an ensemble of socio-morphological forces connecting people, catalyzing experimental open design. Fashion per se, with its affinity for transformation, sets a terrain of becomings, architectural identities, scenery and performance.<br />
Unlike many fashion designers whose brandings, shows and stores are broadcast by ‘pop’ promoters, we will seek to reject the features of the fashion system, such as: its emphasis on seasonal novelty and the repetitive ideas and shapes across collections.<br />
Rather, on the edge of technological couture transformation, F(AA)SHIONS will rapid prototype concepts that stage sharp, raw, urban, experimental and unsentimental spatial/apparel logics.<br />
<br />
AA Paris School will foster integral dynamic qualities opening to surprising typologies intrinsic to temporal bodies, fluid matter(s), and singular proportions, morphed together onto large organic systems.<br />

The workshop will take place from the 21st to 31st March 2011 and will be hosted by Musées des Arts Décoratifs -a Parisian internationally prominent contemporary art hub- 111 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris.<br />

<span style="font-style: italic;">Notre objectif est l’exploration des productions nouvelles du monde de la mode et l’architecture.<br />
<br />
La scène de la mode constitue aujourd’hui un ensemble de forces socio-morphologiques reliant des individus, catalysant un design ouvert et expérimental. La Mode en soi, par son affinité pour la transformation, est capable de préparer les terrains à venir: identités architecturales, scénographies et performances.<br />
<br />
S’alignant à l’univers changeant de la mode, AA Paris School développera des qualités intégrales et dynamiques s’ouvrant vers des typologies singulières intrinsèques aux corps temporels, matières fluides, et proportions singulières, les mettant ensemble en systèmes larges et organiques.</span><br />
